Program

Corpsmembers and Crew Leaders use their preservation and trades skills over a five-month field season at historic sites across Minnesota. Each hitch is nine days, and Corpsmembers camp near each site. Every two weeks, Corpsmembers receive a living stipend, and upon completion of the season, Corpsmembers receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. Northern Bedrock offers summer-only and full-season opportunities.

The skills and training Corpsmembers and Crew Leaders receive include carpentry, masonry, log building restoration, plaster, cemetery restoration, OSHA 10, CPR, First Aid, and personal development.

Historic Preservation Corpsmember

Corpsmembers spend five months (May–Oct 2025) restoring and preserving Minnesota’s historic places while learning life-long, hands-on trade skills, camping on-site with their crews and exploring our state. Projects include historic structure maintenance, cemetery monument resetting and cleaning, and historic landscape restoration. Corpsmembers will learn from our Technical Instructors, earn certificates in OSHA 10 and First Aid/CPR Training, and earn an AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of the program.

Historic Preservation Crew Leader

As Crew Leader, you will supervise a crew of Corpsmembers with varying skills and abilities at historic preservation project sites.  You will oversee projects in cemetery restoration, masonry, window restoration, log building restoration, painting/scraping, roofing, and general carpentry. You do not have to be an expert at these hands-on skills. The main responsibility for Crew Leaders is to ensure effective communication between the Project Host, Technical Instructors, Northern Bedrock Staff, and your crew while adhering to and enforcing our standards of safety both at project sites and at spike camp. You will work alongside your crew to set the pace and solve problems as they arise. You will foster positive crew morale through consistent teamwork, encouragement, and clear communication.
